The policy, announced via Truth Social, explicitly exempts patented, branded, and innovative medications, focusing exclusively on the generic market. Trump characterized the move as a protective measure for American citizens, framing the tariffs as a financial penalty for companies that refuse to establish local manufacturing plants and infrastructure within the grace period.
This shift creates significant uncertainty for India, the world’s primary supplier of affordable medicine. Indian firms currently provide approximately 40 percent of the generic drugs consumed in the United States by volume. Data from the Global Trade Research Initiative shows India exported $9.7 billion in pharmaceuticals to the US during the 2024-2025 financial year. The impact on major players like Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and Lupin Ltd.—which supplied roughly 65 percent of US birth control pill prescriptions in 2024—remains a point of concern, particularly given the February trade pact that previously promised negotiated outcomes for the sector.
