Sunil Tatkare Defends Sunetra Pawar’s Election as NCP President

A legal challenge from senior leader Sachchidanand Singh targeting Sunetra Pawar’s recent elevation has prompted a sharp rebuttal from Maharashtra NCP president Sunil Tatkare. Rejecting claims of internal instability, Tatkare insisted on Tuesday that the process followed all party protocols and relied on broad consensus among district leadership and elected representatives.

The controversy centers on the February 26 election, which saw Sunetra Pawar take the helm of the party unopposed following the death of Ajit Pawar in January 2026. Singh’s legal notice disputes the procedural legitimacy of the vote, calling for an independent oversight committee to hold fresh elections.

Addressing the media in Mumbai, Tatkare dismissed these concerns as baseless, maintaining that the transition adhered to the party constitution. While he signaled a readiness to seek external legal counsel if the challenge persists, he framed the current leadership structure as a unified effort to maintain the party's direction after the 2023 split.
