Revolutionary Guards Target Kurdish Militants in Border Clashes

Near the border town of Piranshahr in West Azerbaijan, Iranian Revolutionary Guards intercepted and killed five members of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. This lethal encounter, which occurred Wednesday evening, highlights the persistent instability along the frontier as Tehran intensifies its crackdown on armed separatist groups operating from the shadows.

The Norway-based rights organization Hengaw confirmed the skirmish, marking another spike in hostilities between the state and Kurdish factions. Tehran views the PDKI as a primary separatist threat, and these recent deaths follow a separate report from state media claiming that six other rebels were killed in the same region just two days earlier.

Simultaneously, the unrest has spread beyond the border provinces. In Kermanshah, a previously unreported Kurdish armed faction launched a lethal attack against the Revolutionary Guards. The group cited the brutal suppression of the 2022-2023 protest movement as the motivation for their strike, signaling a shift toward retaliatory violence. With international backing for these militias remaining ambiguous, the cycle of ambushes and state-led offensives continues to escalate.
