West Bengal Assembly Passes Contentious Public Safety Legislation

With a decisive 176 to 41 vote, the West Bengal Assembly has greenlit the Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026. Championed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the law grants the state expanded powers for preventive detention to address what the government describes as a rising tide of organized crime.

Chief Minister Adhikari framed the legislation as a necessary corrective to systemic political violence, explicitly blaming the Trinamool Congress and CPI-M for fostering instability. Beyond political clashes, the bill provides a legal mandate to target unauthorized mining and wildlife trafficking, areas where current statutes have proven toothless. Adhikari dismissed concerns regarding potential government overreach, insisting the provisions are reserved for maintaining public order rather than suppressing dissent.

Opposition members remain skeptical, questioning the breadth of the detention powers granted to authorities. The government maintains that existing legal frameworks are inadequate to handle the scale of criminal activity currently plaguing the state. By formalizing these measures, the administration aims to curb activities that have long operated outside the reach of conventional policing, though the political friction surrounding the bill suggests the debate over its implementation is far from settled.
