Punjab Chief Minister Summoned by Akal Takht Over New Religious Act

Sikhism’s supreme temporal authority, the Akal Takht, has summoned Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his cabinet to account for the controversial Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. The move signals a deep confrontation between the Aam Aadmi Party government and religious leaders over legislative autonomy.

Opposition leaders, including Congress MLA Partap Singh Bajwa, have rallied behind the summons, framing the directive as an essential matter of religious accountability rather than a political dispute. Bajwa insists that Mann must appear before the Jathedar to address grievances regarding the government’s failure to consult traditional authorities before passing the legislation.

Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Ayali has also echoed these concerns, emphasizing the primacy of the Akal Takht in Sikh life and warning against government overreach. The administration faces mounting pressure to justify its legislative process, as critics argue the 2026 Amendment Act interferes with established religious practices and demands greater transparency regarding its scope and application.
