Chennai Protest Targets Minister Over Resurfaced Drug Allegations

Protesters from the DMK Students Wing gathered near Chennai’s Rajarathinam Stadium on Monday, demanding the arrest of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Minister Sarath. The demonstration follows the viral circulation of a two-year-old video allegedly showing the minister preparing an unidentified white powder for consumption during an Indian Premier League match.

The footage, which the minister reportedly posted to his own Instagram account under the caption 'Thug Life,' depicts a man using a debit card and a 500-rupee note to manipulate the substance on a mobile screen. Sarath has publicly dismissed the accusations, maintaining that the powder was medicinal treatment intended for his child.

Former Tamil Nadu Health Minister M. A. Subramanian condemned the official response to the incident, accusing the government of stifling democratic dissent. As police moved to detain party workers at the stadium, DMK spokesperson Saravanan alleged that law enforcement is deliberately suppressing opposition to protect the minister. The standoff highlights growing political friction over the state’s approach to drug-related allegations and the rights of protesters to hold public officials accountable.
