Hezbollah Rejects Lebanon-Israel Security Pact as Capitulation

Naim Qassem, the newly appointed leader of Hezbollah, has publicly denounced the U.S.-brokered security agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv, characterizing the deal as a formal surrender to Israeli military demands. The rejection follows a recent drone strike in southern Lebanon that has further strained the already volatile border region.

Hezbollah Rejects Lebanon-Israel Security Pact as Capitulation

The pact mandates a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from specific southern Lebanese territories, contingent upon the disarmament of Hezbollah. Qassem argues these terms violate national sovereignty, framing the security zones as an encroachment rather than a path toward peace. His rhetoric signals a refusal to lay down arms, setting the group on a direct collision course with the terms of the accord.

Opposition to the deal extends beyond Hezbollah, drawing ire from the Amal movement and its leader, Nabih Berri, over concerns of a regional power imbalance. Conversely, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz maintains that the agreement is essential for protecting his country's strategic interests. As internal Lebanese tensions rise, the future of the ceasefire remains tied to the enforcement of these disputed security mandates.
