Machado Struggles for Washington’s Backing After Nobel Win

Following her recent Nobel Peace Prize win, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is lobbying the White House for support to return home. Her efforts to secure a diplomatic pathway back into the country, however, are hitting a wall as U.S. officials express mounting frustration with her political standing.

The request comes as Venezuela grapples with the devastation of twin earthquakes that claimed more than 900 lives. Machado, who defied a long-standing government travel ban to accept her award, has engaged with both State Department and White House representatives to facilitate her reentry.

Despite the humanitarian urgency, the administration remains hesitant. President Donald Trump has signaled a preference for Delcy Rodriguez, viewing Machado as lacking the necessary domestic coalition to effectively lead the nation. While the U.S. has committed $150 million in humanitarian aid and deployed search and rescue teams to assist with the disaster, this financial commitment has not translated into political support for the opposition leader's return.
