ADB Targets Bhutan Housing Crisis with $13 Million Infrastructure Push

The Asian Development Bank has greenlit a $13 million financing package to bolster urban infrastructure and affordable housing in Bhutan. By targeting vulnerable families in Thimphu and Phuentsholing, the initiative aims to curb the risks posed by recurring floods while addressing the country’s rapid urban expansion and housing shortages.

The funding comprises a $5 million concessional loan, a $5 million grant from the Asian Development Fund, and a $3 million contribution from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific. These resources will primarily upgrade drainage, sewerage, and water systems in the Ammochhu area, reinforcing Phuentsholing’s role as a vital commercial gateway to India.

Beyond technical upgrades, the project addresses social stability by constructing 56 rental housing units. ADB Country Director Sonomi Tanaka emphasized that the strategy prioritizes inclusive growth, with 30% of these units reserved specifically for women-headed households. The project also incorporates professional training programs for local women during the construction phase to ensure the economic benefits extend beyond physical infrastructure.
