World Bank Backs Cambodia’s Energy Shift with $115 Million Package

Cambodia is pivoting its power strategy from universal access to grid reliability and sustainability, backed by a $115 million financing package from the World Bank. The initiative aims to stabilize a power system currently strained by rapid industrial growth and rising urban demand.

The funding comprises a $110 million credit from the International Development Association and a $5 million grant via the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program. This capital will support the Sustainable Energy Transition Project, which targets improvements in grid resilience and energy efficiency for industrial and residential consumers alike.

While nearly every Cambodian household now has electricity, the national grid faces pressure from increasing consumption. World Bank Country Manager Tania Meyer noted that the investment will bolster economic competitiveness and foster job creation in the clean energy sector. Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rottanak emphasized that this project aligns with the country’s CARE strategy, focusing on clean, affordable, reliable, and equitable power. As part of a regional multiphase program for East Asia and the Pacific, the project encourages private investment in renewable energy and modern infrastructure to secure a greener industrial future.
