Lotus Electric Vehicles to Enter Canadian Market Under New Trade Pact

Beginning next month, Canadian roads will see the arrival of Chinese-manufactured Lotus electric vehicles, a move cemented by a high-level agreement between Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Xi Jinping. Chinese Ambassador Wang Di confirmed that the deal facilitates an annual influx of 49,000 EVs into the country.

The strategic pivot, designed to reduce Canada’s trade reliance on the United States, allows these vehicles to enter the market with reduced tariffs. While the first shipments are slated for Montreal, the automotive expansion is expected to grow, with brands such as Chery and BYD currently negotiating entry terms with Canadian regulatory agencies.

This partnership serves as the cornerstone of a broader bilateral goal to reshape trade relations. Prime Minister Carney aims to double the volume of Canadian exports to China by 2030, a target President Xi has suggested could be exceeded by an additional 100% growth. Despite pushback from American officials, Ottawa remains committed to deepening economic ties with Beijing across multiple sectors to secure long-term market diversification.
