Mitra’s ascent to the upper echelons of American corporate finance began at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, where he earned an engineering degree before moving to the U.S. for an MBA at Columbia Business School. After sharpening his skills at investment firms like Citadel LLC and Millennium Management, he joined Welltower in 2016. He ascended to the chief investment officer role in 2018 and took the helm as CEO in 2020, earning early praise from the board for his analytical precision.
The compensation package is structured primarily through stock awards rather than traditional salary. Approximately $789 million of the total was issued in October, with the value climbing past $1 billion by year-end based on market performance. However, these gains are far from guaranteed; the payout is contingent on long-term retention and rigorous performance benchmarks. Mitra is slated to receive half of the shares in 2031, provided he remains with the firm and meets targets that include a 45% increase in market capitalization and consistent outperformance of major indices.
Welltower stands out in the current market for its aggressive compensation strategy, boasting four executives who earned over $100 million in 2025. Mitra is joined in the top tier of executive earners by other notable figures, including Palo Alto Networks leader Nikesh Arora, who secured $100 million. The broader list of top earners also features George Kurtz, Hock Tan, David Zaslav, and Stephen Schwarzman, signaling a wider trend of nine-figure paydays returning to the C-suite.
