The plea agreement centers on a single count of mishandling classified documents, specifically diary-like notes Bolton shared with his wife and daughter. Prosecutors cited messages between the former official and his relatives, noting a warning from Bolton that read, "None of which we talk about!!!" followed by a reply of "Shhhhh." This admission resolves a case that originally included 18 counts of retaining or disseminating sensitive government information.
US District Judge Theodore Chuang is scheduled to sentence Bolton on October 28 in Greenbelt, Maryland. While the agreement suggests a potential prison cap of five years, the court is not bound by these terms. Bolton retains the right to withdraw his guilty plea should the judge impose a sentence exceeding that duration or levy a fine greater than $2.25 million. Unlike other recent federal cases involving Trump-era figures, Bolton opted to negotiate a resolution rather than challenge the evidence in court.
