Mechanicville Grandmother Suspected in Poisoning Deaths of Five Relatives

A welfare check in an upstate New York apartment revealed a harrowing scene Tuesday evening, as police discovered the bodies of four children and their mother. Investigators now suspect 64-year-old Amy Steadman of orchestrating the deaths of her own daughter and grandchildren through intentional poisoning before taking her own life.

Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt confirmed that evidence found at the scene, including a handwritten note and an array of over-the-counter medications, points directly to Steadman. While the investigation remains active, authorities ruled out the involvement of any outside individuals. The victims include 44-year-old Sarah Myers and her four children: 13-year-old Harper Harmon, 11-year-old Hudson Harmon, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon.

Officers arrived at the residence at approximately 6:30 p.m. after neighbors reported not seeing the family for several days. Chief Rabbitt noted that one of the children had sustained fatal sharp force injuries, though the primary cause of death for the group is suspected to be poisoning. The children were not enrolled in the local public school system, and the family’s father currently resides in Utah. Police have yet to establish a motive for the tragedy, noting only that the victims had been deceased for an extended period before their discovery.
