India and EU Set for Landmark Free Trade Deal by Year-End

Germany’s Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, expects the long-awaited India-European Union Free Trade Agreement to bypass typical legislative gridlock. With negotiations finalized, the pact is moving toward a December signing, marking a pivot in economic strategy that promises to dismantle trade barriers for two billion people.

The agreement, which officials are currently scrubbing for final legal compliance, aims to eliminate tariffs on more than 90% of goods traded between the two regions. Ambassador Ackermann frames the deal as a departure from the protectionist friction that stalled previous accords, signaling a smoother path through the European Parliament than observers initially anticipated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi solidified the commitment during recent G7 discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. If the current timeline holds, the deal will achieve full enactment by the end of India’s fiscal year, cementing a massive, integrated market that redefines the economic link between New Delhi and Brussels.
