Rubio Calms Gulf Allies Over Iran Accord

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded his Middle East tour on Thursday by pledging that American security commitments to Gulf allies will remain ironclad. Speaking in Bahrain, Rubio sought to dispel regional anxiety regarding the administration’s preliminary framework agreement with Tehran, framing it as a pathway toward enduring regional stability.

During high-level discussions with Gulf Arab foreign ministers, Rubio stressed that any diplomatic path forward with Iran would not come at the expense of established security architectures. The meetings in Manama focused on aligning Washington’s strategic goals with the concerns of Gulf Cooperation Council nations, who have remained skeptical of the evolving U.S.-Iran dynamic.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani highlighted the urgency of maintaining maritime safety, specifically welcoming Oman’s initiative to protect vessel transit through the Strait of Hormuz. As a vital artery for global energy supplies, the strait remains a focal point for regional security cooperation. Rubio’s assurances aimed to solidify this partnership, maintaining that no future deal would compromise the defense interests essential to the region.
