Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut rejected the narrative surrounding the period, arguing that Indira Gandhi refrained from dismantling political organizations during her tenure. Addressing reporters in Mumbai, he provocatively countered that India has effectively existed in a state of emergency for the past 12 years, asserting that the original 1975 proclamation held a basis in constitutional law.
Rajasthan Congress MLA Sachin Pilot echoed these concerns, accusing the current administration of weaponizing historical records to manipulate public perception of institutions like the judiciary and the Election Commission. The tension coincides with the government’s recent decision to formally recognize the anniversary of the Emergency’s proclamation as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,' a move the opposition characterizes as a partisan attempt to distort the national record.
