Kolkata Godown Collapse Triggers Political Finger-Pointing

Eight people died Wednesday when an under-construction warehouse crumbled in Kolkata’s Taratala district, igniting a fierce political firestorm. As rescue teams sifted through the debris, local leaders from the Trinamool Congress and the BJP traded accusations of corruption, while authorities moved to apprehend those responsible for the structural failure.

Three individuals, including the project supervisor and two labor suppliers, are currently in custody as investigators probe irregularities in the building’s sanctioned plans. The tragedy has quickly moved beyond the construction site, with MP Saugata Roy demanding that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari interrogate local MLA Firhad Hakim and councillor Anwar Khan regarding potential negligence.

West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh fueled the debate by alleging that high-ranking political figures may have facilitated the project despite its apparent flaws. Amid the blame game, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the collapse.
