Kolkata Orders Mandatory Audits Following Deadly Building Collapse

Eight people are dead and twenty injured after an unauthorized godown shed collapsed in the Taratala area of Kolkata on Wednesday. The tragedy has triggered a government-wide crackdown, with state officials mandating immediate safety audits for all new construction sites under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to address systemic lapses.

West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul confirmed that the state will pursue strict legal action against those responsible for the fatal site, specifically targeting officials from previous administrations who allowed illegal construction to proliferate. The collapse near Brace Bridge necessitated a massive rescue operation, laying bare the dangers of lax oversight in the city's rapidly expanding urban footprint.

Authorities have already detained the building supervisor and two labor suppliers as a Special Investigation Team, led by ACP Joysurja Mukherjee, begins its inquiry. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the victims' families, political tension is rising. State Minister Dilip Ghosh hinted that high-profile figures may be implicated, suggesting the investigation could extend well beyond the immediate site supervisors to uncover deeper corruption within the construction sector.
