EU Considers Security Training Mission for Lebanese Armed Forces

The European Union is weighing a three-year initiative to train and equip Lebanese security forces, a move designed to stabilize the nation's borders and maritime zones. By strengthening the Internal Security Forces, Brussels hopes to empower the national army to assume a more decisive role in managing domestic security challenges.

EU Considers Security Training Mission for Lebanese Armed Forces

The proposal, detailed in internal documents, outlines a strategic shift aimed at bolstering Lebanon’s institutional capabilities ahead of the 2026 expiration of the United Nations' Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate. Officials emphasize that the mission is intended to complement, not replace, existing UN operations. For the plan to advance, it requires unanimous support from all 27 EU member states.

Implementation faces significant hurdles on the ground. Israeli troops currently occupy portions of southern Lebanon following recent clashes with Hezbollah. While a fragile ceasefire persists, the continued presence of these forces complicates the logistical and political landscape for any international training deployment. The initiative remains a delicate attempt to carve out a security role for the EU in a region where local control is currently contested.
