Erdogan and Trump to Hold Bilateral Talks at Ankara NATO Summit

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan expects to engage in direct negotiations with Donald Trump during the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, a meeting intended to project alliance solidarity as the former U.S. president returns to the international diplomatic stage this July.

The summit, scheduled for July 7-8, brings together 32 NATO leaders and global partners to address systemic friction over defense spending and regional security. Erdogan views the presence of the U.S. leadership as essential for maintaining cohesion, particularly as the alliance navigates volatile geopolitical shifts, including the ongoing tensions near the Strait of Hormuz.

Burhanettin Duran, Turkey’s communications director, identified burden-sharing as the primary focus for the Ankara delegation. Turkey intends to recalibrate its defense spending commitments during these discussions. The inclusion of representatives from the Indo-Pacific region further underscores the summit's shift toward addressing security challenges that extend well beyond the traditional Euro-Atlantic borders.
