The Enhancing Climate-Adapted Agricultural Productivity through Improved Water Management (CAWMA) project will operate from June 2026 to September 2031. It aims to rehabilitate three major irrigation schemes in Phalombe and Thyolo, where the 2023 storm destroyed over 50,000 hectares of farmland. By integrating climate-resilient engineering, the program expects to boost crop yields by up to 40 percent and lift annual household incomes above $1,000 for participating smallholders.
Beyond physical construction, the $14.41 million total investment—supported by the African Development Fund—prioritizes human capital and environmental restoration. Approximately 28,000 farmers will undergo training in climate-smart techniques, while 650 hectares of degraded catchment land will be rehabilitated using nature-based solutions. The project explicitly mandates that 40 percent of direct beneficiaries be women, ensuring that female-headed households receive priority access to resources. This collaborative effort between the Malawian government, the FAO, IFAD, and UNOPS seeks to transition regional communities from emergency post-disaster recovery toward sustainable economic stability.
