The political standoff intensified in Kolkata as a rebel faction, led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, moved to establish a new leadership structure. This group appointed senior MLA Arup Roy as chairperson and unveiled a 30-member National Working Committee, claiming to hold the support of a significant portion of the party’s legislative base. The dissidents view their maneuver as a reclamation of the party’s true identity.
Mamata Banerjee responded to the challenge by purging the opposition from within. Her disciplinary committee issued show-cause notices to eight prominent figures, including Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, and Javed Khan, before finalizing their expulsion for anti-party activities. To cement her position, Banerjee submitted an updated list of official office-bearers to the Election Commission, reaffirming her status as party chairperson. Ghosh maintains that the public remains indifferent to these maneuvers, leaving the Election Commission to determine the ultimate legitimacy of the competing factions.
