In January 2021, the Sindhi community handed over 200 kilograms of silver to Champat Rai for the construction of the Ram Temple. At the time, the donation carried a value between Rs 1.5 and Rs 2 crore; today, that figure has surged to approximately Rs 6 to Rs 7 crore. Manwani noted that no receipt was issued at the moment of the handover, with officials promising further updates on the allocation of the precious metal that never arrived. Recent reports of systemic irregularities have prompted the group to demand clarity on whether the assets were diverted.
Public pressure has intensified following claims by former Samajwadi Party MLA Pawan Pandey, who alleged that over Rs 7 crore in donations were misappropriated. In response to the growing controversy, the Uttar Pradesh government established a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to audit the temple’s financial handling. While the SIT has submitted its findings to Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Prasad, the contents remain confidential. Manwani expressed faith in the current government leadership to ensure that any individuals found misusing their positions face strict legal consequences, as the community awaits a transparent accounting of their contribution.
