UN Orchestrates Mass Evacuation of Stranded Gulf Vessels

A ceasefire between Iran and the United States has cleared the path for 11,000 seafarers currently trapped in the Gulf to exit via the Strait of Hormuz. The International Maritime Organization is now coordinating the phased departure of hundreds of vessels, ending months of stalemate in the critical waterway.

The evacuation follows verified safety guarantees and regional cooperation involving Iran, Oman, and the United States. While the operation is officially underway, the International Maritime Organization has not provided a specific timeframe for the transit. Oman’s defense ministry warned that the traditional Traffic Separation Scheme, established in 1968, remains unsafe due to the presence of floating mines and environmental risks.

To mitigate the threat of collisions, authorities are implementing two temporary routes north and south of the standard lanes. Vessels will receive individual instructions regarding their specific transit windows. Oman’s advisory emphasized that the operation demands a gradual, highly controlled approach to ensure the safety of the crews navigating these volatile waters.
