The minister’s comments arrive amid mounting media reports suggesting Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni might attempt to trigger an early vote, bypassing the scheduled autumn 2027 deadline. While some political camps argue that waiting until September 2027 could leave Italy without a fully empowered government during the critical October budget session, Giorgetti’s timeline prioritizes the legislative agenda over electoral maneuvering.
Beyond the election talk, Giorgetti addressed the nation’s ongoing struggle with European Union budget rules. With the 2025 deficit currently sitting at 3.1% of GDP—slightly above the EU’s 3% limit—Rome remains trapped in an infringement procedure. Despite expressing personal doubt, the minister maintained that the government has not abandoned hope of a downward revision during a September review, insisting that the fiscal match is not yet over. Additionally, the government confirmed it will let the current cut in fuel excise duties expire on July 3, citing the recent downward trend in pump prices as justification for ending the relief measure.
