Giorgetti Rules Out April Elections Over Devolution Deadlines

Italy faces a complex legislative bottleneck that precludes an early national election this coming April, according to Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti. Speaking in Rome, he clarified that the government requires more time to finalize critical reforms aimed at devolving additional powers to the nation's regional authorities before any potential ballot.

Addressing recent speculation fueled by domestic media and Bloomberg reports—which suggested Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni might push for an early vote ahead of the scheduled autumn 2027 deadline—Giorgetti dismissed the April window as logistically impossible. He emphasized that the parliamentary process for the regional devolution legislation must be completed first, leaving no room for a spring campaign.

Beyond the electoral calendar, the minister addressed Italy’s ongoing fiscal constraints within the European Union. Rome remains under an infringement procedure for an excessive budget deficit, which national statistics bureau ISTAT reported at 3.1% of GDP for 2025. While this figure sits slightly above the EU’s 3% ceiling, Giorgetti maintains that the situation remains fluid. He noted that a scheduled review in September provides a narrow opportunity for the deficit data to be revised downward, though he conceded that such an outcome remains an uphill battle.
