China’s Fujian aircraft carrier transits Taiwan Strait

The Fujian, China's most advanced aircraft carrier, navigated the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, marking its first recorded transit through the sensitive waterway since April. Taiwan’s defense ministry confirmed the movement, stating it monitored the vessel’s passage through the maritime artery using joint intelligence and surveillance assets.

Beijing views the democratically governed island as its own territory, and this latest naval maneuver aligns with an ongoing pressure campaign against Taipei. While the Chinese defense ministry did not immediately comment on the deployment, Taiwanese officials remain defiant. During a briefing at the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents' Club, Mainland Affairs Council minister Chiu Chui-cheng emphasized that the government rejects Beijing’s unification endgame, asserting that Taiwan will not succumb to persistent sabre-rattling or attempts to erode its sovereignty.

The Fujian represents a significant upgrade in Beijing's naval capabilities. Unlike China's older carriers, the Liaoning and the Shandong, the Fujian features a flat flight deck equipped with electromagnetic catapults. This design allows for the launch of a greater number of heavier-armed jet fighters, positioning the ship as a potent strategic asset. The transit occurs as China simultaneously deploys coast guard vessels along Taiwan's east coast, a tactic Taipei characterizes as an attempt to project jurisdiction over the surrounding waters. Despite Beijing's claims of sovereignty over the strait, the United States and Taiwan maintain that the passage remains an international waterway, frequently traversed by U.S. naval warships to uphold freedom of navigation.
