Putin blames Ukrainian drone strikes for internal instability

Vladimir Putin claimed on Tuesday that Ukraine’s intensified drone campaign against Russian oil refineries is a calculated effort to erode public confidence. Addressing military academy graduates, he characterized the strikes as a strategic attempt to sow uncertainty about the effectiveness of the Russian armed forces during the ongoing conflict.

The frequency of Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure has doubled since the beginning of 2026, causing localized fuel shortages and price spikes. Kyiv maintains that these operations are designed to deplete Moscow’s war chest and bring the reality of the conflict closer to the Russian populace. During his televised appearance, Putin dismissed the tactical utility of these attacks, framing them as a broader psychological operation supported by Western military assistance.

Beyond the domestic impact of the drone campaign, the Russian president assessed the state of the front lines in the Donetsk region. He reported that Russian forces are closing in on Kostiantynivka, a key defensive position within the Ukrainian-held "fortress belt." Moscow continues to demand that Kyiv withdraw from the area as a condition for any potential de-escalation, signaling that the Kremlin remains focused on territorial gains despite the mounting pressure on domestic fuel infrastructure.
