The scale of the theft, totaling exactly £400,310.65, spanned thirteen years between 2010 and 2023. During this period, Murrell diverted party resources to personal accounts, purchasing high-end items from retailers including Harrods and Estee Lauder. Judge Andrew Young delivered the sentence to serve as a deterrent, noting the gravity of the breach of trust involved in his position at the helm of Scotland’s dominant political force.
The conviction follows a protracted police investigation that rattled the foundations of the pro-independence party. Murrell’s former spouse, Nicola Sturgeon, faced intense scrutiny during the probe, leading to her sudden resignation as SNP leader in 2023. While she was arrested as part of the inquiry, authorities cleared her of any wrongdoing in March of last year. Following Murrell’s plea, Sturgeon maintained she held no knowledge or suspicion regarding his misappropriation of party assets.
