The breakaway group, spearheaded by West Bengal Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, announced a new 30-member National Working Committee this week, naming Arup Roy as chairperson and appointing several prominent figures—including Firhad Hakim and Aroop Biswas—to leadership roles without their formal consent. Banerjee insists his faction represents the true party, claiming the right to the official symbol and signaling plans to expand the rebellion across all state districts. He framed the move as a collective struggle against individual influence, specifically targeting Abhishek Banerjee’s role.
Party loyalists have responded with sharp condemnation, dismissing the rebel committee as an illegal entity. Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh characterized the insurrection as an act of betrayal, accusing the defectors of using the party’s name to sow confusion while lacking the courage to face Mamata Banerjee directly. Senior MP Saugata Roy further minimized the threat, questioning the political legitimacy of leaders who migrated from the CPI(M). As both sides prepare for a potential legal battle before the Election Commission, the party remains locked in a struggle over identity, with loyalists vowing to defeat the rebels at the ballot box.
