Addressing the Security Council during its sixth session on the conflict this year, Melnyk emphasized that the current proposal remains a significant compromise for his government. He stopped short of detailing what a recalibrated position would entail, but stressed that Kyiv’s patience is thinning as the war enters its fifth year. The envoy highlighted recent military successes, asserting that Ukrainian strikes have now damaged roughly 40% of Russia's oil refining capacity.
The session also saw heated exchanges regarding the recent damage to the Pechersk Lavra monastery in Kyiv. While Ukrainian and Western officials hold Moscow responsible for the strike on the UNESCO World Heritage site, Russian representatives dismissed the allegations. They claimed the damage was caused by a U.S.-made Patriot air defense missile, insisting their own forces were targeting local drone manufacturing facilities instead.
