ABC rallies viewers against FCC license probes

Facing federal pressure to justify its broadcast existence, Disney-owned ABC has launched a direct-to-audience campaign. The network is urging viewers to lobby the Federal Communications Commission, which is currently conducting early license reviews for eight company-owned stations and investigating the talk show The View for alleged equal-time violations.

The FCC, under the leadership of Chair Brendan Carr, moved the license review timeline up from its original 2028 start date. This regulatory maneuver follows repeated public demands from President Donald Trump that the agency penalize the network for its editorial content. ABC has characterized these reviews as unlawful and unconstitutional, arguing that the government is weaponizing regulatory oversight to suppress First Amendment rights.

Segments airing during The View frame the government’s scrutiny as an attempt to control the guest list and editorial direction of the program. Meanwhile, Carr maintains that the investigation into Disney’s corporate diversity practices and station operations is a matter of public interest compliance. With the licenses of stations in major markets—including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago—at stake, the network is now attempting to turn its commercial breaks into a grassroots defense strategy.
