Jeffrey Donaldson Convicted of Historic Sex Offences

A jury at Newry Crown Court has found Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, guilty of a series of historic sex crimes. The conviction, covering offences against two women between 1985 and 2008, marks a stunning downfall for one of the region’s most prominent political figures.

The 63-year-old politician was convicted of one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault, and four counts of gross indecency. A knighted former lawmaker who served as the longest-standing member of the British parliament from Northern Ireland, Donaldson resigned his leadership post immediately following his arrest in March 2024. His political career, which included brokering a crucial post-Brexit trade deal, ended in disgrace as the verdict was delivered at Newry Crown Court.

His wife, Eleanor Donaldson, also faced a trial of the facts regarding allegations that she aided and abetted the offences. While the jury concluded she participated in the acts, the court had previously ruled her unfit to stand trial due to mental health issues, preventing a formal criminal conviction. The case has sent shockwaves through the region, dismantling the reputation of a man who once stood at the center of Northern Ireland’s complex power-sharing government.
