Bangladesh Deploys Military Ahead of Awami League Anniversary

Soldiers are patrolling Dhaka and five additional districts as the government moves to block potential demonstrations by the Awami League. The deployment, scheduled to last through June 30, aims to prevent supporters of the ousted former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, from gathering to mark her party’s founding anniversary.

The military withdrawal on June 15 was short-lived, as the administration of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reinstated troops to maintain order. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed cited intelligence reports suggesting that party loyalists plan to incite unrest through rallies in regions including Chattogram, Narayanganj, and Gazipur. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to enforce the existing ban on the party’s activities.

Since fleeing to India during the 2024 uprising, Hasina has faced significant legal consequences, including a death sentence issued in November 2025 by a domestic war crimes tribunal. While the Awami League previously dominated the nation’s political landscape, the current administration continues to pursue senior party members through arrests and ongoing investigations. This deployment reflects the fragile stability in the country as authorities attempt to suppress any resurgence of the former ruling force.
