The General Council of the Judiciary voted to launch the proceedings against Peinado following widespread backlash from government ministers and police unions. Justice Minister Felix Bolaños labeled the judge's written remarks regarding the security detail as anomalous and incomprehensible, while the Jupol police union argued the judge unfairly cast suspicion on officers performing their duties.
Peinado’s probe into Gomez involves allegations of influence-peddling and misuse of public funds, charges stemming from lawsuits filed by far-right organizations. While Gomez denies any wrongdoing and has filed an appeal, the political stakes for the Socialist government remain high. Prime Minister Sanchez, who maintains the case is a politically motivated attack, is scheduled to address parliament on Wednesday to provide explanations regarding the broader graft allegations surrounding his inner circle.
