What happens next? — If multiple candidates emerge, each must secure the backing of 20% of Labour MPs—a total of 81 lawmakers—alongside support from grassroots party organizations and affiliated trade unions. Should more than one contender qualify, the final decision rests with a ballot of all party members and affiliates.
How long will the process take? — Nominations are set to open on July 9 and must close before parliament’s summer recess on July 16. Starmer intends for the selection process to conclude by the time the House returns on September 1. If a single candidate meets the necessary support thresholds, they will be elected unopposed and immediately assume the premiership.
