Keir Starmer to resign as UK Prime Minister

Less than two years after securing a landslide victory intended to stabilize British politics, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his intention to step down. He confirmed on Monday that a successor will be in place by the time Parliament reconvenes in September, marking another turbulent shift in Downing Street.

The decision follows months of mounting pressure, which reached a breaking point last Friday when Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham secured a decisive parliamentary victory. Burnham’s return to Westminster energized Labour lawmakers who see the seasoned politician as a potential remedy for the party's plummeting popularity. Starmer, whose approval ratings have hit record lows, initially vowed to fight any leadership challenge before shifting his stance over the weekend.

Burnham now faces a daunting inheritance. Economists at Citibank warned that any new premiership will confront a precarious fiscal environment, constrained by the highest borrowing costs among G7 nations and persistent economic stagnation. While Burnham has campaigned on the need for fundamental change and relief for the cost-of-living crisis, he remains largely untested on the national stage regarding foreign policy and defense. Should he succeed Starmer, he will become Britain’s seventh prime minister in the decade since the Brexit referendum, a turnover rate unseen in the country for nearly 200 years.
