The diplomatic push follows a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding finalized on June 17 by President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Negotiators, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for the US and parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for Iran, are working under a 60-day window to resolve long-standing disputes. Qatar is facilitating the talks alongside Islamabad, with specialized expert groups tasked with overseeing the implementation of the agreement.
Progress remains delicate, hindered by recent regional flare-ups. Although the talks were originally slated for Friday, exchanges of fire between Israel and Lebanon caused delays. The economic stakes are underscored by the status of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy corridor responsible for nearly 20 percent of global supplies. While Iran claimed the waterway was shuttered following an Israeli strike in Lebanon, Washington insists the route remains open. Vance expressed cautious optimism, citing positive momentum from early discussions and the unprecedented level of direct engagement between the two leaderships.
