Uddhav Thackeray and DK Shivakumar Confer Amid Sena UBT Defection Crisis

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited Matoshree on Saturday to meet Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, as the party faces a severe internal rupture. The meeting occurred while six of the party’s nine Lok Sabha MPs skipped a crucial parliamentary session, fueling rumors of a potential mass defection.

The meeting at Thackeray’s residence included Yuvasena chief Aaditya Thackeray and MP Sanjay Raut. While Shivakumar described the discussion as a warm exchange on public interest, the timing has intensified speculation regarding the party’s future. The Sena (UBT) leadership is currently battling an internal rebellion reminiscent of the 2022 split, with rumors of parliamentarians aligning with the Eknath Shinde-led faction.

To counter the exodus, party Chief Whip Anil Desai issued a show-cause notice to the absent MPs, demanding an explanation within 24 hours or facing disqualification under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. However, the rebels may seek protection under the anti-defection law, which provides immunity if two-thirds of the parliamentary group merges with another entity. Union Home Minister Amit Shah further complicated the political landscape in Kolhapur, declaring that the Shinde-led group is now the only recognized Shiv Sena. Despite persistent merger rumors, Thackeray has publicly dismissed any possibility of his party integrating with the Congress.
