Vance heads to Switzerland for high-stakes talks with Iran

U.S. Vice President JD Vance departed for Switzerland on Sunday to initiate direct discussions with Iranian officials, aiming to secure breakthroughs on the country’s nuclear program and a potential ceasefire in Lebanon. The mission follows a volatile week of intensified cross-border violence between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants.

Before departing, Vance struck a cautiously optimistic tone regarding the situation in Lebanon, suggesting that the pace of conflict is decelerating despite ongoing hostilities. He emphasized that maintaining stability along the border remains a continuous management challenge to guarantee the safety of both Israel and Lebanon.

His diplomatic outreach coincides with a deadly weekend of strikes. Lebanese state news agency NNA reported that at least 20 people died in Israeli operations on Saturday. Israel stated these actions were a targeted response to projectiles launched by Hezbollah throughout the previous night.
