Paris Police Detain 20 During Forbidden Iranian Opposition Protest

Twenty people were taken into custody on Saturday after demonstrators gathered at Place Vauban in central Paris to protest political executions in Iran. The rally proceeded despite a court-upheld ban, which authorities imposed citing potential clashes between opposing political factions, a justification organizers dismissed as a pretext for suppression.

Hundreds of protesters assembled near the Les Invalides monument before being dispersed by law enforcement. Shahin Gobadi, representing the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), confirmed the arrests. The group, which serves as the political wing of the People's Mujahideen Organisation of Iran, has historically staged large-scale demonstrations in the city, often drawing support from former U.S. and European officials.

The prohibition arrived Thursday, shortly after a diplomatic call between French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, regarding efforts to de-escalate the conflict in Iran. While the NCRI alleged the ban was a direct result of this high-level communication, the French Foreign Ministry denied any link between the diplomatic engagement and the decision to restrict the public gathering.
