Israeli Strikes Hit Lebanon Hours After Truce Commencement

Ten people died in Lebanon on Saturday as Israeli airstrikes targeted the southern region and the Bekaa Valley, shattering a fragile truce that began only hours earlier. Israel maintains its military operations are a direct response to Hezbollah fire, while the militant group vows to block Israeli movement within its borders.

The renewed hostilities cast doubt on the viability of a 60-day interim agreement between the United States and Iran, which hinges on a total cessation of military actions. While the truce took effect at 4 p.m. Friday, Israel remains outside the diplomatic pact, asserting it is not bound by the deal and will keep forces stationed in the roughly 5% of Lebanese territory it currently occupies. A town official in Barish reported that a single strike on a residential building claimed the lives of a family of four, including two children, while the Lebanese army confirmed the death of one of its soldiers near Nabatieh.

Diplomatic efforts face mounting uncertainty as communication channels falter. U.S. Vice President JD Vance recently canceled his travel to Switzerland for planned negotiations, and the White House has remained silent regarding potential meetings between Iranian officials and envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Despite the instability, the interim framework promises significant economic relief for Iran—including the unfreezing of tens of billions in assets and oil export waivers—a prospect President Donald Trump continues to defend against domestic political pressure. Since the conflict escalated on March 2, the Lebanese health ministry reports 3,912 fatalities, while regional instability continues to exert upward pressure on global energy prices.
