Maharashtra government to challenge Nimbalkar murder acquittals

The acquittal of nine suspects in the 2006 double murder of Pawanraje Nimbalkar and his driver will be challenged in the Bombay High Court. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to file an appeal against the court's decision.

The special CBI court’s ruling to acquit all defendants, including former NCP leader Padamsinh Patil, left the victims' families and state leadership in shock. The 2006 killing of the Congress leader and his driver Samad Kazi in the Kalamboli area of Navi Mumbai had been a high-profile investigation for nearly two decades. Shinde stated that he and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis consulted with the Union Home Minister to ensure the case remains under active legal scrutiny despite the trial court finding insufficient evidence to secure convictions.

Omraje Nimbalkar, the son of the deceased and a Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament, attended the court proceedings as the verdict was delivered. The case, which saw nine individuals arrested and charged by the federal agency, has now shifted toward a high-stakes legal battle in the appellate court. Shinde emphasized that the brutal nature of the daylight murders warrants a continued pursuit of justice, signaling that the state government intends to prioritize the reversal of this outcome.
