Danon accused Patten of succumbing to an obsession with targeting Israel, explicitly criticizing the influence of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The tension escalated when Vanessa Frazier, Guterres’ representative for children and armed conflict, attempted to intervene with a point of order. She urged the ambassador to avoid personal attacks, asserting that her office possessed verified evidence regarding the reported violations.
Dismissing the intervention, Danon told Frazier to remain silent, insisting that as a representative of a member state, his critique of the organization’s work was justified. The dispute centers on recent reports that place Israel on a global blacklist for violations against children, a move the Israeli Foreign Ministry previously condemned as a new low in diplomatic relations. While the documents also blacklist Hamas, the Israeli government has vowed to sever ties with Guterres, whose decade-long tenure concludes at the end of this year.
