The aircraft features a distinctive red, white, dark blue, and gold paint scheme personally selected by Donald Trump, marking a departure from the traditional Kennedy-era blue and white design. While the president defended the acquisition as a pragmatic necessity, the gift has ignited debate in Washington regarding both the propriety of accepting such high-value assets and the security protocols surrounding their rapid conversion. Officials from the Air Force maintain that the jet meets all mission requirements, despite concerns from Democratic lawmakers over potential security vulnerabilities and the opaque nature of the conversion costs.
This Qatari 747 fills a widening gap in the presidential aviation program. Boeing’s primary contract for two purpose-built 747-8 aircraft is now four years behind schedule, with costs exceeding $5 billion. With the official replacement fleet not expected until mid-2028, the military fast-tracked the retrofitting of this interim jet to ensure the president and his staff have a modern transport option. Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink emphasized that the service prioritized safety during the accelerated overhaul, which included installing advanced communication and missile defense systems. The new livery will eventually extend to the wider fleet, including the future VC-25B models and four modified Boeing 757-200s.
