The ceasefire, negotiated by U.S. and Qatari officials with Iranian input, follows a period of heavy combat that saw significant casualties on both sides. According to the Lebanese health ministry, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 47 people on Friday alone, pushing the total death toll in Lebanon since March 2 to 3,912. Israel confirmed the loss of four soldiers during the recent escalation, a blow that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously vowed would carry a heavy price.
Despite the agreement, the situation on the ground remains volatile. While an Israeli military official stated that no strikes occurred after 5 p.m., local reporting and witnesses suggested continued activity, including a drone strike that killed two people on a southern Lebanese highway. Israeli officials maintain that their forces will remain stationed in southern Lebanon, asserting a continued right to act against emerging threats despite the diplomatic arrangement. Hezbollah, for its part, has denied violating the truce, accusing Israeli forces of ongoing ground incursions and attacks on civilian infrastructure near the strategic Ali al-Taher hill.
