Calls mount for international probe into missing Belarusian activist

Anatol Kotau, a Belarusian opposition figure sentenced in absentia to 12 years for alleged extremist activities, vanished last August shortly after arriving in Turkey. New investigative reporting suggests the 46-year-old was intercepted at sea by the Russian coast guard, prompting urgent appeals for a coordinated international investigation into his whereabouts.

The disappearance occurred after Kotau departed from Trabzon on a yacht bound for the Black Sea, accompanied by two Russian nationals and an Azerbaijani woman. According to a joint investigation by Deutsche Welle, the Belarusian Investigative Center, and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, the vessel was detained by Russian authorities, who removed Kotau from the ship. His current location remains unknown, and the circumstances surrounding his decision to board a craft heading toward Russian-controlled waters continue to baffle his supporters.

Exiled activist Dmitry Bolkunets has formally requested intervention from U.S. National Security Adviser Andy Baker, characterizing the incident as a state-sponsored abduction by the FSB. Similar pleas have been directed toward Polish leadership, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, and the United Nations. John Coale, an envoy for President Donald Trump, has committed to raising the case with the government in Minsk. Anastasia Kotau, the missing man’s wife, expressed hope that these diplomatic appeals will leverage the refugee status her husband held in Poland to force a breakthrough in the search.
