Macron and Sanchez Reject Offshore Migration Hubs

French President Emmanuel Macron has broken ranks with proponents of offshore processing, declaring that he does not support the creation of return hubs for migrants in third countries. Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day EU summit in Brussels, he questioned both the efficacy of such facilities and their alignment with European values.

Macron and Sanchez Reject Offshore Migration Hubs

While the European Parliament recently moved to overhaul migration policy—a shift designed to expedite deportations and potentially authorize offshore detention—Macron remains unconvinced. He stated that he has never encountered a functional return center in a third country, arguing that such projects fail to uphold the fundamental principles of the European project.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez echoed these sentiments, noting that Spain stands in the minority on this issue. He characterized the proposed hubs as a drain on limited economic resources rather than a pragmatic solution to migration challenges. Despite his opposition, Macron emphasized that he respects the autonomy of member states that choose to pursue these centers independently.
