Israel and Hezbollah Agree to Friday Ceasefire

At 4 p.m. local time on Friday, a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is set to take effect, according to a senior U.S. official. The agreement follows a volatile period of intensified cross-border violence that threatened to derail a broader interim deal intended to stabilize the Middle East.

Negotiators from the United States and Qatar finalized the terms of the pause with assistance from Iran. The breakthrough comes after a violent surge that saw Israeli airstrikes kill at least 18 people in Lebanon, while four Israeli soldiers died in a Hezbollah attack in the south. These events placed immense pressure on the interim agreement signed Wednesday, which mandates a permanent cessation of military operations across all fronts.

A Hezbollah lawmaker previously indicated that the group’s engagement with Washington was contingent upon a comprehensive halt to hostilities. Although violence had subsided earlier in the week, the recent escalation forced an urgent intervention to salvage the diplomatic framework involving the U.S., Iran, and their regional allies.
